WEEK 16 PREVIEW

Hi all, and welcome to Week 16!

One thing to mention before we get under way -- this week has two Christmas Day games on Saturday, which means we have to move the final deadline up 24 hours. Your Thursday Night Football pick has to be in by the normal time (noon on Thursday), but your weekend picks have to be in by 8:00 pm on Friday.

Ok, that in mind, let's take a look at this week's "If..." chart:

The NFC had very little movement, with the top seven seeds all staying exactly the same.

Not the case in the AFC though, where Black And Blues Brothers has taken the top spot back, pushing Brenda's Bulldogs into the #2 slot. Indiana Jems has traded spots with Lyle Alzado, with Jems going to the #3 spot and Lyle going into the grey. Everything else is more or less the same, with a little jockeying for position throughout.

With that, let's take a look at our divisional matches for the week:

In the AFC North, JPP's Missing Fingers is looking to capitalize on Brenda's Bulldogs' back-to-back losses and make the move back into the division lead. Brenda currently owns the head-to-head tiebreaker, so if they match each other's wins/losses over the next two weeks, then this division will come down to a Week 18 showdown between this pair to determine a champion. So he will definitely be looking to get the season sweep over I Will Win It All here. For his part, I Will Win It All is officially out of the hunt for the division title, but is still in the thick of the Wild Card race. However, he can afford zero mistakes -- he's currently at a .500 record, and that's not going to cut it when the season is done. At a minimum, he'll need to win two of these last three to have a shot, but he might need to end the season with a five-match winning streak in order to secure his postseason berth.

As has been the case the entire season, the AFC West remains the tightest division in the league with all four players having a reasonable shot at the title. Why Not Zoidberg? might be in last place, but he's only one win behind the division-leading Indiana Jems. And if can sweep these final three weeks (which are all divisional matches), then the title will (almost certainly) be his. The quest starts now against the division's #2 player, Secretly Victorious. She may be ahead of Why Not Zoidberg? in the standings, but she'll actually have a little harder road to the title, since she's already met Indiana Jems twice this year and been swept by her. So there's no tiebreaker to be won by Secretly Victorious -- she's going to have to finish out with a clearly better record, otherwise she'll be looking to the Wild Card hunt.

Since the 5-9 Mike C lost both his head-to-head matches against Vlad M in the AFC East, the division title is out of both his reach and that of the 4-10 Deesato. And while Deesato no longer has a path to a Wild Card spot, Mike C might be able to piece one together. At the moment, a 7-7 record lets you compete for the final WC slot, so if Mike C can win out these final three weeks, me juuust might be able to get into contention with the five players currently vying for that last spot.

In the NFC East, Turf Toe has wrapped up the division title but is still looking up at the at the other two 10-win players and needs to keep piling up the wins if he hopes to earn that top seed and the first-round playoff bye that goes along with it. Hyena, on the other hand, is in that area that we call "mathematically alive but practically dead". Since there might be a way for every piece to fall together perfectly and have him grab a Wild Card, we can't call him officially eliminated just yet. Bottom line for Hyena -- win every remaining match, and seriously cross those fingers.

The other half of the NFC East is in head-to-head action as well, with Jeff B and Bad Mice both trying for a desperation spot in the postseason. Jeff B is in a slightly better position, and currently makes a appearance at the bottom of the playoff picture chart at the top of this page. But what it all comes down to here is that both of these players will be strongly rooting against Rabid Ferrets and LV-426 Xenomorphs this week, because if both of those players lose, then the winner of this one will be just one match back from the Wild Card with two weeks left to go. Anyone's ballgame then!

The NFC North is now a two player race, and neither of those players are LV-426 Xenomorphs or Ragesters. Xenomorphs is currently in 8th-place in a seven-spot race, so he needs to keep putting up the wins to keep pace and hope that Rabid Ferrets and/or Pigskin Palookas trips up along the way. For his part, Ragesters is in much the same boat as the aforementioned Hyena -- the postseason ship hasn't sailed, but he's going to have to make a serious leap for the gangplank.

All right, keep in mind those early deadlines, and get your pick submissions in as soon as you can. Enjoy all!

All right, the Thursday picks are in, but first, it's been pointed out that we have another division title locked up!

Vlad M has a three-win lead in the AFC East with three matches left to play. That means the best the two five-win players could hope for would be to match Vlad M's record and then move on to tiebreakers. Here's the thing though -- if Vlad M and Mike C were to end the season with matching record, then Vlad M would win via head-to-head record (Vlad M scored a season sweep). And if Vlad M and Buttfumbler were to have matching records at the end, and we look past the split series to the next tiebreaker, then we get to division record. There we find that Vlad M can finish no worse than 4-2, while Buttfumbler can finish no better than 3-3. So at the end of all that, we say congratulations to Vlad M for winning his fifth division title!

Ok, now on to tonight's game. Twenty players are facing a difference here, so expect this one to have a big impact on how this week shakes out. Check the pick chart to see if you've got anything on the line here. Good luck, and make sure you have your full weekend picks in by tomorrow night!

Merry Christmas morning everyone! The sun is up, the gift paper is everywhere, and the full pick chart is ready for you to unwrap. No specialty matches on the board this week, so nothing to do but to sit back, enjoy the holiday, and then settle in for an evening filled with football goodness. Have a great day all!

WEEK 16 RESULTS

Thursday Night Football through 4:00 Games: A lot of football in the books, and a lot of players locking down their match this weeks. Coming off of a wild Sunday we have Black And Blues Brothers, Heisendad, I Will Win It All, Jeff B, JPP's Missing Fingers, Louisville Islands, Mike C, Green Bowl Tokers, Pigskin Palookas Rabid Ferrets, Why Not Zoidberg?, and Turf Toe each solidifying a victory.

Nothing on the line here in tonight's game, but the five remaining matches are coming down to the result of tomorrow's Dolphins/Saints game. Take a look at the updated pick chart, and check back after MNF to see who wraps things up in late-season action!

Monday Night Football: A low-scoring Dolphins win gives the final victories of the week to Beep Bops, Evil Squad of Evil, Ragesters, Brenda's Bulldogs, and Vlad M. Nicely done all!

Congratulations going out to Turf Toe -- he was one of six players to go 13-of-16 this week, but it was his MNF score total that was closest to the mark, earning him the Week 16 Player of the Week award.

So with that, let's take a look at how this week's action has helped shape the playoff picture:

--Coming into this week, Turf Toe and Vlad M had already wrapped up their respective division titles.
--Black And Blues Brothers has turned five-straight wins into a lock on the AFC South title.
--In a good day for alliterative-named players, Brenda's Bulldogs, Delta Dawgs, and Beep Bops have all guaranteed themselves a playoff berth. All three are current division leaders, but none of them are locked into that position. However, even if each of them were to lose the next two weeks, they have each still earned a minimum of a Wild Card spot.

Congratulations to everyone who has punched their postseason ticket! That's six spots filled, and eight left up for grabs. There are a bunch of players that are still in control of their own destiny -- bottom line, if you're on the cusp, putting up back-to-back wins to close the season will likely get you to the dance.

So that'll do it for another week here -- check the finalized pick chart, see how you're looking in the Standings, and get your Week 17 picks submitted. For the rest of the regular season, games are Sunday-only, so you have until 8:00 Saturday night to get your full pick set in. Have a great week everyone!
